This year, SFAF commemorates 40 years of service to the community. On this occasion, we take a look back and share our storied history of leadership in HIV, and the many ways we have grown and evolved to respond to the changing landscape of HIV. Our 2022 Pride store merchandise honors this history with designs that reflect SFAF’s work in prevention, care, and advocacy across 40 years.
Bleachman promotes harm reduction:
In the late 1980s, SFAF’s Prevention & Education department created the cartoon character “Bleachman” to promote the harm reduction practice of using household bleach to sterilize needles and syringes. In a time when it was difficult to obtain new equipment for injection drug use, sharing was commonplace, and with it came a high potential for HIV transmission. (This is a practice that is no longer recommended.) Bleachman appeared in comic books, on brochures, on posters, on TV commercials, and other educational materials–one of the first large-scale and highly successful social marketing and advertising campaigns in the U.S. to promote this method of harm reduction.
